Tech Review: ShredLights SL-1000

Take back the night with the SL-1000! The smallest 1000 lumen mountable flashlight ever made. It’s the big brother to the SL-200 which I’ve been using on my night rides. Most recently, we had some fun riding at sunset in the (Newport Beach) Back Bay with the ShredLights team for a photoshoot. We had zero issues navigating the trails seeing everything. Funny enough, NBPD stopped us to let us know that someone called in that there was a “biker gang” on the trail. We all laughed and the officer went on his way.

It’s been a blast testing the lights. The SL-1000 really does light up the night. The medium diffuser disc does change the angle a bit giving you a more dispersed beam to see everything and anything. Without the disc, you’ll get a more central beam to see further. Its aluminum shell feels very durable to the touch. It installs in seconds using the S-LOCK (quick release) mounting system. I have several mounts that will attach to my Ruroc helmet as well as on the SUPER73 handlebars.

There are five brightness settings; 50, 250, 500, 750, and 1000 lumens with four flash modes. The flash modes are; constant burst, fast flash, slow flash, and burst flash. I’m not really using the flash mode unless I really want to get attention from surrounding vehicles. I do see the value of using these modes though.

The controls are simple. There’s one button at the top below the charging port that controls the brightness and it will indicate the battery level. Two dual side buttons control mode selection, internal setting memory, and dual click to power off. It’s super simple to use just like the SL-200.

The box includes one light, charging cable, medium diffuser, and stickers. It is a versatile light that you can carry with you on trips on and off your board or bike. It’s also IPX7 waterproof and can be immersed into the water up to three feet. I won’t be swimming with this light but good to see that it can get a bit wet for those rainy situations. I will be bringing this light to bonfires and campsites as well to illuminate the area.

Maybe there’s a taillight version in the future but very much stoked on the SL-1000. I look forward to seeing what might be next for the product lineup.

ShredLights was started at San Diego State University in 2013. The first units were 3D printed and hand-assembled to ship out to the first customers. They’ve come a long way since then.
